The Puerto Rico Small Business and Technology Development Center (SBTDC) of the Inter-American University and the U.S. Small Business Administration, has launched a new multimedia platform, called BIZ Learning Center, for anyone who wants to learn how to establish a business in Puerto Rico, among other topics.

The Puerto Rico SBTDC has created a digital tool that will allow to educate on different business topics in a simple, convenient, and accessible anytime, through its website.

The BIZ Learning Center contains modules featuring topics that will take its users through the different stages to establish and strengthen their business, at no cost. These educational modules will allow entrepreneurs to educate themselves on topics such as business idea, business plan, corporate structures, financing options, permits, and digital marketing.

The Puerto Rico SBTDC will continue to develop additional modules with topics such as taxes, human resources, and accounting, among others.

“Our goal was to develop an interactive and virtual platform that allows our entrepreneurs to train and validate their knowledge through new technological tools with a variety of courses relevant to the development and strengthening of their small businesses,” said SBTDC Executive Director Ricardo Martínez.

“This platform, which is available through our website, allows users to complete the courses at their convenience,” he said.

The pandemic has been a great challenge for the Puerto Rico SBTDC due to the increase in demand for their services which have increased by 305% compared to previous years. From January 2020 to May 31, 2021, the SBTDC has offered 233 online courses with a total of 26,560 participants, nonprofit officials said.

In addition, they have individually advised some 8,130 entrepreneurs, helping them to access $125 million in capital to boost their businesses and create jobs.

The online courses are also available in the Entrepreneurial Library section at their website.

Tal parece que la pandemia del COVID-19 ha motivado a muchos puertorriqueños a convertirse en empresarios, y a los que ya son dueños de negocio a mejorar sus destrezas. Esto, a juzgar por el aumento dramático en los servicios de asesor a empresarial que han registrado los Centros de Desarrollo de Pequeñas Empresas y Tecnología (SBTD por sus siglas en inglés) de la Universidad Interamericana durante el pasado año.

“La emergencia por la pandemia ha sido un gran reto para e Puerto Rico SBTDC por el aumento en la demanda de sus servicios, los cuales han aumentado en un 305% con respecto a los años anteriores”, manifestó Ricardo Martínez, director ejecutivo de los SBTDC, programa que funciona como una alianza entre la Inter y la Administración Federal de Pequeños Negocios (SBA por sus siglas en inglés).

Para satisfacer esa demanda alcista por servicios de asesoría, y al mismo tiempo adaptarse a los tiempos, el SBTDC ha desarrollado una nueva plataforma multimedia, denominada BIZ Learning Center, enfocada en proveer educación virtual sobre cómo establecer un negocio en Puerto Rico. “Es una herramienta digital que permitir educar sobre diferentes temas empresariales, de manera sencilla, conveniente y accesible en todo momento a través de su p gina de internet”, sostuvo Martínez.

Explicó que el BIZ Learning Center, ya disponible en el website negociospr.org, contiene siete módulos que llevarán al usuario, de manera gratuita, por las diferentes etapas para establecer y fortalecer su empresa. Los temas son: Active su Idea de Negocio, Desarrolle su Plan de Negocios, Estructuras Corporativas, Registros Comerciales, Alternativas de Financiamiento, Permisos, y Estrategias de Mercadeo Digital.

Cada módulo tiene una duración de entre una y tres horas, dependiendo del tema. Todos contienen ejercicios que complementan el aprendizaje e incluyen glosarios con los términos más utilizados en cada tema empresarial. Además, proveen pruebas de validación de conocimiento y emiten un certificado de participación por cada curso.

Asimismo, los módulos están en versiones de narración y de lectura, lo que facilita que pueden accederla usuarios con limitaciones visuales o auditivas (ciegos o sordos).

La plataforma digital puede descargarse en teléfonos inteligentes. La misma fue desarrollada por la empresa SDT Learning, empresa puertorriqueña dedicada a ofrecer servicios para la educación a distancia. El SBTDC añadirá otros módulos que cubrirán temas muy solicitados también por los empresarios y futuros dueños de negocios, entre ellos Contribuciones, Recursos Humanos y Contabilidad.

“Nuestro objetivo era desarrollar una plataforma interactiva y virtual que permita a nuestros empresarios capacitarse y validar sus conocimientos a través de nuevas herramientas tecnológicas con variedad de cursos relevantes para el desarrollo y fortalecimiento de sus empresas. Esta plataforma estará accesible y disponible a través de nuestra página de internet y podrán completar los diferentes cursos a su conveniencia, destacó Martínez.

Al concluir el módulo el usuario podrá recibir la asistencia individualizada virtual o presencial de un consultor de negocios del SBTDC, a través de sus nueve centros alrededor de la isla. Para ello, podrán solicitar una cita bajo la sección “Asesoría” en la misma plataforma.

“Nos satisface que el SBTDC ya tenga disponible al público esta nueva herramienta multimedia e interactiva. La Inter, como institución de vanguardia en educación a distancia, apoya las iniciativas creativas que fomenten el empresarismo, disciplina que se debe conocer en toda carrera o profesión. Como institución sede de los SBTDC, reconocemos el valor que este programa provee a los emprendedores y a los pequeños y medianos negocios”, expresó Manuel J. Fernós, presidente de la Universidad Interamericana.

Preguntado sobre cuáles son los negocios que más interesan montar los clientes del SBTDC, Martínez indicó que la mayoría –el 26%de las solicitudes- quiere emprender en la industria de alojamiento y servicios de alimentos. Le siguen los negocios de ventas al detal (14%), los servicios profesionales (12%), negocios agrícolas (12%) y emprendimientos relacionados al área de salud (10%).

La demanda por establecer nuevos negocios son, en su mayoría, para la zona metropolitana, seguido de Ponce, Caguas, la zona suroeste y la zona central o la montaña.

Mientras, en cuanto a los negocios ya establecidos que más han solicitado asesoría durante la pandemia figuran: alojamientos y servicios de alimentos (hospederías, cafeterías, restaurantes y food trucks) con 21%.

SAN JUAN – Since the pandemic began, small businesses have been seriously affected by health-safety restrictions, but the local and federal government has provided incentives and grants under different programs as well with the intention of continuing to keep businesses open and retain jobs. However, the number of programs often creates confusion and there is a call to present them in a single event. That is precisely what the Small Business & Technology Development Center (SBTDC), a cooperative agreement between Inter-American University and the Small Business Administration (SBA), will do in the virtual forum, entitled “Impulso en grande al pequeño” (which can be roughly translated as Big Boost to the Small), that it will hold March 18, from 8:45 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“We have coordinated with leading agency leaders to present to entrepreneurs all incentives live in this virtual forum. Among the programs to be presented will be the Business Interruption Grant, CDBG-DR grants for the business and agricultural sector, the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) of SBA, and business benefit programs under the American Rescue Plan and the Economic Aid Act,” said Ricardo Martínez, executive director of the Puerto Rico SBTDC.

SBA District Director Josué E. Rivera, Resident Commissioner Jenniffer González, Economic Development Secretary Manuel Cidre, CDBG-DR Undersecretary Maretzie Díaz and Undersecretary of Finance Ángel Pantojas will participate in the forum.

The SBTDC, which debuted its new slogan by the same name as the forum, has been proactive during this pandemic, making sure that businesses have access to the incentives and programs available. Last fiscal year, more than 18,000 entrepreneurs participated in the webinars it offered, and over 5,000 entrepreneurs accessed more than $100 million in capital to keep their businesses operating and retain their employees through the different financing programs including the SBA’s PPP and Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL).

“Small businesses are essential in every society as they generate most jobs. As an educational entity, it is our responsibility to provide guidance about all aid by facilitating the processes so that they benefit the most. Since 1997, at Inter-American University we offer the people of Puerto Rico the services offered by the SBTDCs, with centers in most of our campuses in cooperative agreement with the SBA,” said Manuel J. Fernós Esq., Inter-American University’s president.

The forum is geared toward small business owners and self-employed individuals who have been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. It will abound on how to qualify for specific incentives, deadlines and parameters, depending on the industry.

“The U.S. Small Business Administration continues to administer vital economic aid programs to assist our small businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic. As of this week, the SBA has guaranteed almost $500 million in Paycheck Protection Program loans in 2021 alone. I urge all Puerto Rico small business owners, sole proprietors and independent contractors to register to attend this Town Hall meeting hosted by the PR SBTDC to learn about programs and services that can help you recover,” SBA District Director Josué E. Rivera said.
